In "The Danger of Prosperity" William Bates insightfully teaches Christians how wealth, honor, and fame often contribute to the downfall of the unwary. He challenges his readers with the tender encouragement of a shepherd, to carefully consider the ways in which prosperity that is abused is both fatal and destructive, while providing numerous helps that Christians who enjoy God's hand of blessing can use to avoid its sinful abuse and improve it to God's glory and their eternal advantage.
This classic work has been carefully prepared for the enjoyment and benefit of a new generation of Christian readers. Previously available only as part of a "complete works" lithograph from the early 19th century, this edition--completely revised by the editor of The Digital Puritan--includes embedded scripture references from the English Standard Version, as well as numerous annotations to make the text more understandable to the modern reader. Includes a biographical preface by James Marsh.

How many books have been written in the last fifty years on how to attain great wealth? Countless!! How many books have been written in the same time frame on 'The dangers Of A Prosperous State'? Have There been any? The Puritans,I believe, were much more aware of this danger and wrote in great detail,to help expose it.The author's opening sentence in the preface of this book helps to convey its significance(especially for this generation)"The experience of all ages has verified that none are exposed to more dangerous trials than the prosperous in this world."What are some of the reasons that prosperity can be so dangerous?-p.8"All sin is an irregularity... either in overvaluing and loving the creature;or in disesteem and indifference to the creator, and prosperity increases the carnal heart's aversion of God in the same degrees as it strengthens the propensity to the world."
The Word Of God is replete with warnings re-a prosperous condition- 'The prosperity of fools shall destroy them'(Proverbs 1:32),'Give me not riches, lest I be full and deny thee, and say,Who is the Lord?'(proverbs 30:8-9),'When thou shalt have eaten, and art full, then beware lest thou forget the Lord.'(Deuteronomy 6:10-12),'Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God...'(1Timothy 6:17).Bates boldly asserts, with strong Biblical support, that great prosperity provides a strong temptation to atheism.Man's history is littered with those whose souls have been slain by this goliath.
The fear of God is a grace that will continue to be exercised by the saints of God in heaven. That fear is an awe and reverence of God,which desires to always do that which is pleasing in his sight and to shun anything that incurs his displeasure. If to fear God is the beginning of wisdom, what is the essence of that wisdom which fears Him? Mr.Bates informs us that-"the true notion of wisdom consists in the foresight of evils... it is the best wisdom that avoids the greatest danger." What could be more precarious than to have Almighty God against you,to have Him as your adversary. This is where a prosperous condition(is so dangerous to the ungodly but it also is a potential danger to the godly as well-those who are at ease in Zion) "...the long enjoyment of plenty, and ease, and peace, renders men constantly secure and fearless...".That is why the first two and a half chapters of the book of Romans give a somewhat detailed account of man's depravity and his desperate condition before his maker. The apostle Paul gives this sentence which summarizes the explanation for the depth of man's utter depravity-'There is no fear of God before their eyes'(Romans 3:18).They continue to live in high handed rebellion against the Lord with no concern for the consequences, and what are the consequences- 'Thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgement of God'(Romans 2:5).God calls upon men not to harden their hearts when truth is proclaimed,by those appointed by Him to sound a warning-but "prosperity affords many diversions whereby the sinner shifts off conversing with conscience" and thus the sinner remains in great danger and is slumbering when they ought to be terrified. The conscience is cauterized by the vanities of this world. The sinner should be shaken by such clear and powerful statements such as-'What will it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?'(Matthew 16:26).The author sadly notes-"how few, that were lost in the corrupting vanities of this world, have found their souls?" ,p.29 "None are so insensible of their spiritual needs, and averse from the humble acknowledgement of them,as the prosperous sinner, and none more unlikely to obtain spiritual riches."
A number of books have been written on 'The Marks Of Grace'(how does one distinguish the godly from the ungodly, how to separate the wheat from the chaff). William Bates gives a key distinction for us here- the ungodly p.35"The universal principle of carnal persons is to be happy here ... their main care is to obtain and secure temporal things, the materials of their happiness." the godly-p.35-36 "The supernatural principle of a saint is to please God and enjoy His favor." This is what makes the distinction so clear(no matter what men profess or even believe about themselves).- "as men believe, they love, and as they love, they live." That is where the rubber hits the road!!!
The Danger Of Prosperity by William Bates is an extremely relevant book for our times.Though written in the 1600's its message is desperately needed at present. The in-depth understanding and dissection of man's depravity reaches its apex in Puritan books such as this.
